Foreign volunteers in Sheltered housing of St. Michael

As you may know Sheltered housing of St. Michael is a project of Caritas Brno. We have the honour to host foreign volunteers for couple of years already.

So far we have experienced two main streams to finance the volunteers in Czech Republic:

  • European Volunteer Service (EVS) – this is non-formal educational program financed by European Union and it comes under Youth in Action program, Action 2, http://www.mladezvakci.cz/
  • Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF) = ARSP Action Reconciliation Service for Peace as the name sais it is to help to overcome some the wrongfulness of the W.W.II.  The program is focused on Jude, People with developmental disabilities, Romans and other oppressed groups, http://servitus09.wordpress.com/

The task of both types of volunteers is similar. The day in Sheltered housing starts around 3 p.m. when clients are coming back from workshops. The volunteer may accompany some clients from the workshop to Sheltered housing and that is how the service starts. When clients are back they do all the regular household duties and they have some time for rest or their hobbies. In this time volunteer helps clients to learn and do all their responsibilities and also can enjoy some time with their hobbies and share his/her interests with clients. There is also some time to share volunteers culture, by cooking some national food, showing pictures of his/her country.  We appreciate new ideas and new activities for clients. It is always refreshing to learn something more for both clients and employees. There is always an assistant in the service with volunteer and so the volunteer has no responsibility.  And don`t worry we don`t expect you are an expert.

How is the work with people with developmental disabilities? Well, it is very interesting, one has always what to learn from them and about them. Especially about the way of communication with these special people.

Who do we want to thank: Servitus o.s., ASF, EU and its Youth in Action program and all the great volunteers Elena and Victor from Spain (EVS)

Nora and Michaela from Germany (EVS)

                     Daniela from Germany (EVS)

                     Marius from Lithuania (EVS)

And ASF all from Germany Martin and Christiane, Sara, Philipp, Anna, Lena, Dorothea, Markus, Neils, Angela, Iza, Silvia, Mia, Bernadette, Fredy, Daniela and more
